I’ve been lucky enough to do what I love for 20 years — solve problems using creativity. Big brand problems, small advertising problems, doesn’t really matter. Because when you love the craft you find even the smallest bits challenging and interesting.
When it’s appropriate I try to use humor. I believe it’s the best way to get a point across in a crowded space. Humor can be scary to some, so I always lean on my years of experience to put people at ease. I think that a little bit of nervousness is good, because if you aren’t nervous then you’re probably being boring. And that’s the worst thing to be in this business.
When it comes to leading a project, I believe listening is key. Listening to the client, to the research and to everyone on the team. We’ve all been in meetings when it seems that everyone can’t wait to speak, often talking on top of each other. I’m not one of those folks. I sit, listen, and then speak up at the appropriate time. Some see this trait as a flaw. However, I’m quite proud of it.
My career has giving me the privilege of living and working in some of the neatest cities in the world. New York, San Francisco, Hamburg, Detroit, Durham, and my hometown Minneapolis. I wish everyone could have the experiences I’ve had and the stories I can tell.
In my spare time I like to write jokes for stand-up and sketches for a comedy show that, who knows, could be green-lighted someday. I also enjoy spending time in the outdoors which hearkens back to my days as a kid growing up on National Wildlife Refuges. Once a year I venture up to my dad’s lake house in Vermont for some excellent fishing. I’m hoping one of these years he’ll let me drive the boat.
And finally, on the subject of A.I. Many are worried that the bots will be taking over our jobs in the creative industry. I, for one, welcome our new Chatbot overlords. In the coming years, a person like me could be useful in motivating other humans toiling below in your underground lithium and nickel mines.
Below is my résumé. You know, the important fun stuff.
